MEXICO CITY, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Mexico reported 2,973 new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, the highest single-day increase in cases since the pandemic started, bringing the total to 59,567, the country's health ministry said Thursday.

It also reported 420 more fatalities, raising the death toll to 6,510.

Cases have started to stabilize over the past week in Mexico City and its metropolitan area, the worst hit area in the country, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said on Sunday.

On April 16, the Mexican government extended a nationwide lockdown until May 30 to halt the spread of the disease.

On Wednesday, the government announced it will ease restrictions in three stages starting Monday to reopen the economy.
