Thai king unable to appear for birthday speech
Mexico City News.Net Thursday 4th December, 2008
On the 81st birthday of their beloved King, the Thai people have become concerned over his health, after he failed to make his usual birthday speech.
There had been great anticipation over this year's speech due to Thailand’s major political crisis
King Bhumipol Adulyadej normally addresses the nation with a message of peace.
The king was replaced by his son at Chitralada Palace, where VIP’s had gathered to hear his majesty.
Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn addressed the nation, thanking the Thai public for their loyalty and asking them to do their best “for the country and the people.”
Earlier in the week the King had presided over the inspection of the Royal Guards.
Meanwhile, Thailand's Government has cancelled a parliamentary session due next week to select a new prime minister.
The session had been due to take place on Monday and Tuesday following a constitutional court ruling this week that disbanded the ruling party and two coalition partners and ousted Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.
Under the constitution, a new prime minister must be chosen within 30 days of Mr Somchai being stripped of the post.
The house speaker will now set a new date for the selection.
