Canadian parliament ordered to take a break
Mexico City News.Net Thursday 4th December, 2008
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has managed to have parliament suspended.
Canada's Governor General Michaelle Jean, who represents Queen Elizabeth as head of state, has agreed parliament should now not sit until January 26th.
The move will enable him to avoid a motion of no confidence in his minority government, which has only been in power for seven weeks.
The no-confidence vote was designed to allow the opposition to join the government.
However, Mr Harper has successfully argued that Canadians want him to continue with his government program.
Mr Harper plans to present budget proposals next month designed to deal with the country's economic crisis.
